An introduction to: creating our own reality Relationships going awry, dwindling finances, dis-ease in the body are things most of us have had a brush with, or see at large in the world around us. These experiences are dealt with in as varied the ways as in which they are experienced. The initial anger, frustration, fear may lead us down various paths: sometimes a philosophical questioning of the role of destiny versus free will in the event, perhaps a psychological ferreting into the past and subconscious for reasons ascribed, or maybe a spiritual acceptance of our ‘lot’ as our karma. We may then adopt various means to handle the situation: meditation, correct breathing, therapy and healing amongst others. All of these however, helpful as they are, concentrate on how to accept and cope with situations we are already faced with. We rarely come across concepts that teach us how to indeed change this reality, and how to create a new one more in line with what we so yearn for. Seth, a channeled entity, shows us how to do exactly this! While Pollyanna effect positive thinking books abound, Seth presents a theory of Personality, Beliefs, Reality, and Time so largely encompassing that it contains detailed knowledge of not only how we create everything we experience in our personal reality, but also how to use this knowledge to indeed bring about that change we aspire to. As it is difficult to present the entirety of what he conveys in one article, some key concepts are introduced here: 1) we each create our personal reality through our beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world. 2) These beliefs work through our conscious mind, and not from some vantage hidden un-conscious, inaccessibly exerting control over us 3) and most importantly, the point of power is in the present, and not in the past of this life or any other. Our ‘personal reality’ is what exists around us and is what we refer to as our experiences and environment. Our first step is to understand that whatever exists in our environment, whether they are relationships, skills, health, wealth, success or lack thereof, they exist first in our thoughts and feelings. That is how our reality is created. We tend to see this literally backwards, thinking that an experience produces, or is responsible for, the respective beliefs we associate with it. However it is quite the reverse: all our experiences are the product of our beliefs, of our conscious and only seemingly ‘unconscious’ thoughts and feelings. A string of broken relationships is not what makes us believe that relationships don’t last .It is some belief we have held, for example maybe a belief in ‘everything’ being ephemeral, or a fear yet unobserved, that we are not worthy of receiving love that infact leads to such experience. The ‘event’ then reinforces the belief and lead to more such experiences. If we carefully ‘observe’ the thoughts held by us through the years, they will describe to us our ‘environment’. They will clearly indicate the nature of our physical events. What exists physically exists first in thought and feeling. There is no effect in the exterior world that does not spring from an inner source. There is no other rule. So our next step is to examine our thoughts. Otherwise it is only when we are assailed by difficulties that we begin to wonder what is wrong? Sometimes we blame others, or our background, or circumstances outside us, or a previous life! Or we simply hold karma responsible and accept the problems as a part of life. However, if we do not like our experience, we can change the nature of our thoughts and expectations. Every thought has an electro-magnetic reality and every belief has a “result”, in our terms, and the same kind of thought habitually repeated will seem to have a more or less permanent effect, producing the events in our lives. We are indeed so intimately connected with the physical events that compose our life experiences that often we cannot distinguish between these occurrences and our thoughts that gave them birth in the first place! If we can start to observe our beliefs and that we indeed create everything we ‘have’ (or do not) in our life, we can begin at once to alter our mental conditions and create a better reality around us. Unknowingly we are in the process of creating our personal reality even now through ‘invisible’ beliefs! But if we can instead use this ability more ‘consciously’, and examine the nature of our thoughts and feelings to make these beliefs visible, we can project those that we want to manifest. In order to manifest our reality however, we need to understand the mind. It is the apparatus with which we come to create our own realities and simply put it is made up of three aspects: conscious mind, unconscious mind, and ego mind. The unconscious or inner mind (also been referred to as the super conscious mind) can be described as that inner portion of us which is connected to the larger reality and hence is aware of ALL, thereby having its ‘amazing’ knowledge and ‘powers’. It receives and processes the inner data. The ego mind is that part of the mind that focuses outward towards the physical world. It perceives and processes the outer data. The conscious mind receives data from both the inner mind and the ‘outer’ ego and we can say it is poised in between. It is not shut off from the inner mind but because we are more focused /directed towards the perceptions of the ego it relies more on this data! It can however work to its optimum if it remains equally ‘open’ to the perceptions of both the inner and outer minds allowing for it to combine ‘data’ from both these sources. (What we usually refer to, as the subconscious mind is that portion of the conscious mind that we do not observe and are thus unaware of. However if we pay attention we can observe the data here as it belongs to our conscious mind.) All these, we must realize are explanatory and not actual divisions. It is most important to note that on our physical plane it is the conscious mind that directs all activity, and has at its command all of the powers of our larger self. It is equally important to note that our beliefs are held in the conscious mind. Those, which that we bring with us into our current life, and those that we create in the present. In accordance with these beliefs the conscious mind either accepts or rejects all further thoughts received from the inner and outer sources/minds. It is the ‘decisions’ that the conscious mind then takes, that the inner mind works overtime with all its ‘powers’ to materialize on our physical plane. The conscious mind is the boss! It is why we have the conscious mind!! We have chosen in this physical life the experience of directing the nature, shape, and form of all our creations. We have chosen to learn to handle this inexhaustible energy. This great creativity infact is our human heritage. Any knowledge that is consciously ‘learnt’ becomes a part of our larger self, and thus part of the vast repository of ‘unconscious’ knowledge in other lives and realities that we do not have to consciously learn again! As we have seen above it is our beliefs that create our life events whether we are aware of them or not. Also we have now seen, these beliefs are all held in the conscious mind and the only reason we may consider many of them ‘unconscious’ is because we have not paid attention to them! They are merely unobserved! Thus to create better realities all we need as a start is to assimilate and become aware of the beliefs we hold. Once we are more aware of our many thoughts and feelings, we can begin work on eradicating or changing those which lead to events we would rather not create, and focusing on those that result in good experiences. Left alone these wishes and fears contradict each other, unwittingly creating our life events wily nily: some positive and at other times quite the reverse. Now we can choose to change that! Mentally note (or make a diary if you prefer) every thought and feeling that crosses you mind. Initially some may surprise you, as you have not acknowledged these as your beliefs as they conflict with ideas you think you have accepted; those that you usually refer to as your conscious thoughts! This simple exercise will show you what you are ‘creating’ even now for yourself. Recently a friend desired to loose weight, and thought her beliefs too were in tandem. However with this one simple exercise she realized she spent the larger part of her day observing, despising, and concentrating on how “fat I am”. After much inner work, the underlying belief she discovered much to her amazement was that one cannot have everything in life, and having so much, fat is the price she must pay! Then choose areas that are your trouble spots. Note the thoughts you have held and do so now, associated with these areas. Equally important, is to choose areas of your life which are working well and observe your beliefs there! View how both areas correspond to the ‘beliefs’ you hold. For example if you have troubled relationships with colleagues, view your beliefs on people. You may discover you believe people are not to be trusted! Or that life is a rat race which each looking out for his own! And that very belief will be reflected in your relationships: you will meet people who betray your trust, or those that crucify you for their own purposes! And you will wonder all your life why you meet such people and even think that it is your bad luck or karma never realizing it was you own belief!! If these relationships are on the whole positive however, you will discover healthy beliefs about people, maybe, for example, that people are generally helpful or that teamwork is mutually productive for all! We must not confuse desire with beliefs, because very often our first remark on reading these concepts is that “I have always desired (for example) success, but then why is my career such a mess!?” We need to observe the thoughts that lie beneath the so called “desire”: having desired success there could be a range of invisible beliefs based on fear of failure, a lack of self worth, or maybe a belief in ‘punishment’ and ‘deserving’ it due to karma, that can result in this lack of success. That is why sometimes we note people who are obsessed with good health, and focused so strongly on disciplinary food and exercise habits infact becoming unwell at some point in their lives in a manner that doesn’t fit in with their exemplary lifestyle. It is because having desired good health they may have believed so strongly IN bad health that it becomes part of their reality.
We are not as familiar with our own thoughts as we may imagine! We tend to ignore many or take them for granted, either way rendering them invisible! Once we start work on observing our beliefs we will find a chain, inextricably linked in ways we had not observed. In our above example, of a lack of success, it could be an observed belief that poverty is synonymous with spiritual or ‘good’ people, and wealth denotes greedy materialistic persons! This may be linked to an overlooked belief and desire to be spiritual and ‘good’ and we set into motion events keeping us poor based on a series of invisible beliefs!! Start NOW. As the power point is in the present. Childhood traumas, past events or even past lives do not have as rigid a role to play, as we seem to think! They are not the determining points which have set into action a chain of beliefs and thus events over which we have lost control! We do come into each life with some conditioned beliefs, and others have developed over the years, but we now have the key: what the conscious mind chooses NOW has the edge! It is in the NOW that you can step in, observe and change your reality more in line with what you want. I shall quote Seth: “The acceptance of this basic fact would help us tremendously: that matter is formed by the inner qualities that give it its vitality, that structure follows expectation, that matter at any time can be completely changed by the activation of the creative faculties inherent in all consciousness”. This will not mean that effort is not required, but it will mean that we are not powerless in creating our reality; and it will give us control of our own personal experience!

A further understanding on: creating our own reality A chubby three year old girl ensconced in her mothers lap and eating an ice-cream cone or a wan waif asking for food at your car window. How did these children create this reality of theirs? Are they not born into it? Starting to work with our beliefs, leads us to many questions, one of them being about the characteristics and environments that were ours at birth. Our current life may ‘begin’ at birth and childhood, but this is only a midpoint in the larger journey. We, being more than the personalities of our current lives, have, as this larger entity, chosen the backdrop we need in this physical life. The mind is thus not a blank slate when we arrive here, but infact, equipped with a memory far exceeding any computers. It already contains the beliefs, and all the experiences we have held and had through the larger journey. We bring in our conscious minds therefore, those beliefs, which initially create the environment we need for our further development. The inner or higher self chooses this background from a far larger perspective than our currently limited one, making us sometimes wonder why we chose it! It is like a farmer choosing the soil for his crops: sometimes a rich fertile soil, but sometimes a more arid or volcanic one Each personality however, comes with more than its personal background and beliefs; it also comes with a built-in idea of the reality in which it will operate. Each system of reality has its own set of such ‘rules’. To function in the physical dimension we have chosen, we come with built-in agreements upon which we base our ideas of physical existence. These can be referred to as Root Assumptions. On our plane the cuddly girl could therefore not ‘fly’ to the ice-cream vendor or the waif do without ‘food’. Our mental equipment is thus highly tailored to meet the specialized physical environment we are born into. While the mind has full freedom and is larger than this environment, it must operate within the context of existence that it has chosen. It agrees to play by the ‘rules’!! Just like when you enter a casino, your experience inside is bound by its rules. You make money (or loose it) by the turn of the roulette wheel, knowing that outside, different, larger norms and ways apply. However, each of us retains or is connected to the larger reality through the inner mind. We thus have the ability to gain new experiences within this physical framework and yet to add creatively to these experiences, and in doing so work our ways through the specialized system breaking the barriers of reality we came into. We must remember we have chosen to come into physical life to perfect the freedom of consciously creating our reality; for us to realize that consciousness creates matter. That is why we have the conscious mind in the first place. Infact man has been endowed, or rather, has endowed himself with a conscious mind, in order to learn better how to consciously direct the nature, shape and form of his creations. But back to our little girls! They have each come with some inherent beliefs, which gave them either the ice-cream cone or the waif experience. Each has chosen that background for this current physical life, which they think will be best suited towards their growth, like a student choosing his college. Their life’s’ ‘syllabus’ is not fixed, but more like life in an American university, where you begin with a certain course and can decide later the ways you will major! Students follow certain university codes of conduct and rules; likewise our girls are equipped with the root assumptions of the physical reality they have chosen. However we begin to note as our little girls grow, that even while operating within these root assumptions, they develop certain common beliefs and share certain experiences and events with others around them. The ice cream in her mouth even as a first time experience tastes sweet and cold. She is then caught in a thunderstorm, just as the waif and others. This is a result of Mass beliefs. The girls do not exist alone in their environment. There is the mother, the ice-cream vendor and the masses of people driving by in their cars at whose window the waif comes. Similarly we each come into a physical environment, which we share with many others, who have also chosen this reality to grow. All beings on this planet have chosen this dimension, this reality, for their own reasons of growth. As thoughts have a certain electro magnetic reality, we often pick up those around us. The ones most commonly held become our beliefs almost by default: Ice cream is sweet. More even, ice cream makes us fat! Till we learn that our beliefs create the physical reality around us we both contribute to, and accept, these mass beliefs. Together we thereby create sunny days or storms, wars or peace! However we can change these beliefs if we observe and work on them .The whole point of this journey is to realize this!! That we create our reality, and as humans we do so through the beliefs held in the conscious mind! In conclusion we can view life as a chemistry laboratory! Our beliefs are the components used; and the environment and events thus created are the results of the ‘experiment’! Our physical reality, indeed everything we see around us is that result. If we do not like our environment or life events, we can change our beliefs as the chemist would change his components. Divya Kumar-2003
