ALL
SADHANA IS ACTUALLY DONE BY THE SOUGHT, AS THE SEPARATE SEEKER DOESN’T EXIST!
THE SHIFT FROM THE NOTION OF I/ME TO ABIDING AS I AM – THERE IS ONLY ONE ‘I’
CHANGE IS ONLY
VISIBLE TO THE UNCHANGING – BECOME AWARE AND ABIDE AS THE CHANGELESS SELF.
Om
chants begin…
So
come…just relax…see yourself in that beautiful pool in front of you… this you
have been doing from your very first gathering with us, so today become aware
today how that itself was a stepping stone to witnessing… some aspect of you viewed
yourself outside you…so you were outside the picture…! The seeds for the move from seen to the Seer
were sown long ago, now you reap the sadhana of the many years …
The shift has been described in many ways to you: from self to Self… from the seen to the seer… from the engaged
involved participant (and its ’my life’/‘my troubles’) to awareness rather than what you are aware
of - and now as the shift from ‘i’ /‘me’ unto ‘I Am’. And this shift is the one and only step
towards awakening…all other steps are but a prelude towards this. You can call it the dissolution of
the ego notion, dis-identifying from that role played through you or simply awakening
from the notion of ‘i’ ‘me’ to abiding as ‘I Am’. This the very root of ‘awakening’…it’s
like pulling out the bottom most card from the house of cards (rather than
dismantling it from top card by card) -the
entire illusion of the cards collapses! So
once this root is removed- identification with the ‘i’ ‘me’- the entire house of
illusion of your identity collapses…one single step…!
As a process it actually works both ways:
initially it a better life even as the ‘i’ ‘me’- because you are better able to
live in samsara as the witness rather than the engaged participant pulled up
and down! And of course as witnessing is established, it leads to awakening…when
there is no me to be concerned about ones samsara! This is ultimately the one
and only step to awakening… the shift from the ‘i’ ‘me’ to the ‘I Am’ till
ultimately even the ‘I Am’ drops.
We have started using this concept of
the ‘i’/‘me’ - ‘I Am’ for a certain reason: it is imperative for you all to
understand that there is always only one ‘I’! There are not two parts - as the
concepts of self to Self or seen to Seer might make it sound - there is only the one ‘I’- and this concept
may subtly convey that to your subconscious. The ‘i’ ‘me’ and ‘I Am’ (the seeker and the
sought; the seen and the seer, the engaged participant and witness; the ego
self and Awareness) are not two separate ‘I’s’: It’s always the one I … God…Consciousness… I
Am Presence (call it what you may) which in entering the game…in choosing to seemingly
forget…in adopting an identity becomes the ‘i’ ‘me’- but it is always always always
even throughout the ‘i’ ‘me’ stage - actually the ‘I Am’.
And therefore all the sadhana is
actually done by the ‘I Am’…the ‘i’ ‘me’ doesn't exist! If an
actor who identifies with his role in the movie needs to disconnect from that
role, the role itself can do nothing, it’s the actor who engages in that
practice of disconnecting from the role…! This is very subtle and very
important for you to understand…there is only one ‘I’…’i’ ‘me’ and ‘I Am’ are
just two ways of looking at the same ‘I’ .
Ramanna Maharshi has in fact called this
the ‘I-I’…and so you shift from the ‘i’ ‘me’ notion to the ‘I Am’; but there never
was an ‘i’ ‘me…there never was a mirage…there never was that character that the
actor identified with - and therefore truly this ‘shift’ from the ‘i’ ‘me’ to the
‘I Am’ is a simple awakening from the disillusionment…dis-identifying oneself
with a notion.
Liberation is not for the ‘i’ ‘me’ but
from the ‘i’ ‘me’. And all the work being done here in
recent gatherings are towards this one single step…as you abide longer and
quicker and firmer in the ‘I Am Presence’ more apparent is it to you that the
‘i’ me’ doesn't exist or has never existed - in that what is called ego disillusion takes place…just
in the awareness…because there was no ego to actually dissolve! Like just the
awareness that the seeming water is a mirage makes the water disappear – it’s not that the water was there and is
then removed! And towards this… all you
can do is whatever sadhana is happening through a you. Indeed automatically through self enquiry the
move from the ‘i’ ‘me’ to the ‘I Am’ happens. And therefore when we say you
have to do your sadhana…we are not speaking to the ‘i’ ‘me’ but the I Am is
speaking the ‘I Am’- the ‘I Am’ has
chosen to release itself from the illusion of
the ‘i’ ‘me’- that is why you are present here…that is why these gatherings
***
We have in earlier gatherings already mentioned to you some of the salient
features of this witnessing…of self enquiry : a) being stepping out of the picture…b) the shift to the higher frequency (both of
these have been done in great detail in the last few weeks) c) the third being the shift from the changing
self/ ‘i’ ‘me’ to the changeless ‘I Am’…even this has been done
before…but we will focus on it more today.
Of course these are not the only
features of witnessing or self enquiry…there are many others as
you shift from the ‘i’ ‘me’ to the ‘I Am’ : you shift from that small insignificant little self into
becoming the vastness that you are; you move from chaotic noise within to the silence of your ‘I Am’ presence…you move
from the ‘you vs me’ to the oneness of
the ‘I Am’ presence…so many ways to describe it…each one done with you over
the years. And as you abide more and
more in your I Am Presence you will see the changes in your day to day life…within
samsara too! In circumstances where you
would have felt small and the situation outside you large, you will now be able
to experience how the situation doesn't seem so large anymore…yes its there…a
hiccup…a disturbance…a trouble…a issue…but you are larger than that…it doesn't
take over you. The chaotic noise that would usually be present in the times of
trouble now changes…yes the worry is there…yes the noise is there…the static is
there on the surface but at the very
core is an inner silence you cannot describe…sometimes you even wonder how can
I have this inner silence in this situation which seems so troublesome…but this
is because are abiding in your ‘I Am’ presence. You may often experience this
that you want to be angry…you may choose to say I will not talk to somebody…I
will treat them badly…I will do this…I will do that but you find you cannot
anymore…you say forget it…it doesn't matter…that is the shift from the you vs
me…the oneness of the ‘I Am’.
And so instead of using the words from
self to Self…we are now using the concept from ‘i’ ‘me’ to ‘I Am’…the same
‘I’…unchanging I! This is what we will focus on today: The changeless Self. That
unchanging aspect within you…that which observes all the changes. Become aware
that even in witnessing it is
Unchanging Self which witnesses the flow of changing thoughts…! Just become
aware of this when you witness - and you become aware of that Unchanging Self! For
the remainder of the week make this your focus…your mantra… your sadhana: awareness of the unchanging- changeless Self
that I Am.
In fact if we are to bring up the three
salient features again: moving out of the picture; shifting to a higher
frequency; and shifting into the unchanging Self - if you are truly doing the
sadhana you will become aware that the third - moving into the unchanging Self
- is the simplest to do once you become aware of it - it
is something you can do by yourself from within. To change to a higher
frequency sometimes you might need a tool of positive thinking…a chant…a
prayer…to step out of the picture you need to break free of it- and therefore
one of the simpler features in witnessing and self enquiry is to become aware
of, and therefore focus on, the unchanging changeless Self. Of course when you
move into the changeless Self the other two features automatically becomes
present because the moment you become aware of /move into/abide as changeless
Self - you automatically move into its higher frequency and you step out of the
changing picture! All are interlinked beloveds …find that which is your
simplest point of connecting with the ‘I Am’…but for this week we urge you all
to single mindedly be focus on that unchaining changeless Self.
That which is aware of the changes
cannot be changing! Just like we told you that when you are aware of the chair
you cannot be the chair…! In the same manner when you are aware of the changes
- only something which is beyond the changes –which is unchanging - can be aware of the changes surely? Become
aware of this, don’t understand it intellectually – and it will become so
obvious that you will feel “but of course”!
And then the Changeless Self becomes palpable and clear to tap into… and
that’s what we urge you to do this week-
to own this not understand it! Even now, become aware, which is that
Self which hears this flow of words…the words are changing… emotions and
feelings are changing…your understanding is constantly changing…but which is that
unchanging changeless Self ware of these changes? And the moment you become
aware of this changeless Self your frequency shifts to the higher frequency…you
step out of the picture…! Witnessing happens!
***
So we shall repeat some of the sadhana
to abide in this unchanging Self…we
have given this to you in your last few gatherings…and we shall repeat because
this week this is your focus…not the shift into the Higher Frequency…not
getting out of the picture…but becoming aware of and focusing and abiding in
this changeless Self for as long as you can:
So first…first thing in the morning, the
moment and we mean the moment your eyes open, or even before your eyes
open…when you know you are awake…at that sacred point between sleep and waking
become aware of that changeless Self of yours which is aware that you slept, which is
aware that you dreamt; which is aware that you had a deep sleep; which is aware
that you are waking now…!!! There is
some part of you that is aware of all these changes…and the very fact that
there is this part of you that is aware of these changes it cannot be that
changing self…it has to be the changeless…! Do this the moment you awake…don’t
make it a intellectual repetition of what we are saying : spend a few moments
till this unchanging Self is real…palpable…as real and as palpable as the ‘i’
‘me’/ Divyaa self which you have taken as real. This Unchanging Self will
become as palpable…as real…! So spend a few moments every morning: which aspect is aware of this self which
wakes and sleeps and dreams and wakes …I Am that unchanging Self.
Secondly take this into your day…as you
get up…as you go through the motions of your day…brushing your
teeth…writing your notes…having your breakfast…going to work…there are many
many many many changing events that make up a day…do you know how many millions
of little little little little changes takes place through the day…millions if
not billions…it’s a wholly changing flow that you call ‘a day’! It’s not a
static day…it’s a ever changing flow …moment to moment - but there is some aspect of you who is aware of all those changes -you
are aware that you have got up… had your breakfast… did this… did that… didn't
do this… didn't do that…you are aware of those hundred little nano moments of
change…who is that ? That is the
Changeless Self.
Please be aware, and hear this well, there
has to be something outside the changing ‘i’/ ‘me’ to be aware of the changes -
or you would have been lost…unconscious from one moment to another! When you
were eating you would have only known eating…when you were walking you would have only
known walking…when you were working you would have only known working…you would
not have known the different different different bits…! But you are aware of
the changes, of the many many events and nano moments that make up the day…that
is because of this Changeless Self…do this beloveds through the day…make
this changeless Self real…palpable…a True Presence.
Then a third sadhana is become aware of
this through the physical world! Even
the so seeming solid physical world is nothing but a flow of change! Just look out of your window…look at all
the changes that take place in the physical world…the sea ripples…the birds flying…the
cars rushing by…a dog is barking…people are walking…rushing about…seasons
are changing, change…change…change…change…change. There can be not any scene in
your physical world which is not made up of a billion little changes…ever
changing…but there is this aspect of you
that is aware of all these changes…this is the changeless Self .
Fourth: see the physical body dance yet be aware of
that unchaining still Self - see the physical body exercise…running…tread
milling…be aware of that unchanging Self. Use
these little exercises beloveds to tap into this unchanging Self…once you do
you will not need them…then what you need to do after that is keep focusing on
this unchanging Self till it becomes your natural state of being.
Again Please be aware, and hear this
well, if this changeless Self did not exist you would have been aware only of
the moment you are in nothing before or after! Change is only visible to the
unchanging…! Again do
this, tap into that unchanging Self- that changeless aspect which is aware of
all the changes therefore cannot be changing! Tap into this presence - allow
it to be real and as tangible as your physical self. In fact as you do this
more and more, the physical self will loosen its hold on you and you will abide
as the unchanging self aware of the ever changing me/divyaa self walking
talking thinking etc - and this unchanging Self will be where you abide- it
will become more real and the me/divyaa will be like a little stick figure that you call you!
Fifth, and yes this may not be a
personal experience but all of you are aware of the process of dying and reborn
and dying and reborn and dying and reborn - so again be aware it is the changeless
Self aware of these changes! Indeed t is the unchanging Self that you
awaken to- and therefore when you awaken to the changeless Self - there is no more death…there is no more
rebirth.
Sixth- now change of focus from outside
to inside- do this don’t merely hear us and become aware: I was happy five minutes ago, I am sad
now…I
was angry in the morning and happy now…I
was anxious and now I am at rest…changing
changing changing emotions…moment to moment…hour to hour ! But who is that
Changeless Self who is aware of those changes…it has to be a changeless aspect that
is aware of the changes or you would have plunged from one to another without
being aware of the previous or latter!
When you were sad you would have only known sadness…you would not have
known that you were happy; when you were happy you would be only happy not
known that there is also sadness…when you were angry you would have only known
anger not known that you were peaceful…but
you know that is not true beloveds…you see the entire gamut of changing emotion
which is only possible because of the changeless Self. This is your sadhana: Tap
into this moment to moment. Be aware I
was angry…I was sad…I was happy…I was this…I was that…that is the changeless
Self who is aware! Own this…make it your experience not our words…and that
changeless Self will become a true tangible
presence…and this changing Self will be like a stick figure with
flickering ephemeral emotions.
And if you do all of these, this
changeless Self will become more and more palpable, you will then NOT need to
do these steps to discover the changeless Self! It will become
more and more apparent…more and more palpable…more and more real…! Sadhana is
only to reach there! So spend the week just tapping into this changeless Self
aware of the changes! Soon you won’t
need ‘the practice’, you will instantly be able to tap into this changeless
Self…and abide in it quicker, firmer, longer.
Then the changeless Self will be experienced
as a beautiful inner silence or inner stillness in the face and amidst the ups
and downs.
Be aware of this when you are having an
issue …all you have to do is tap into that Self who is aware of you having the
trouble…that unchanging Self. Therefore do we say that it is easier to tap into
this and use this changeless Self as a door way into self enquiry and
witnessing rather than step out of the picture or raise your frequency. Most of you experience this Self in
meditation…it is so real…it is so tangible…that is why all your worries and
troubles seem so far away in meditation…but take this out into your day…let that unchanging Self become the ‘Ah!
This’…and the this i/me/Divyaa become the ‘oh ! that’
And a word of caution: running into your
little igloo…suppressing…ignoring…denial is not tapping into the unchanging
Self.
If you suppress your anger…your emotions…your feelings…if you go into that
little igloo of yours…you are doing yourself great disservice. You have to be
aware of what you are feeling…surrender to those thoughts and then shift into
that changeless place…not bury them…suppress them…that will lead not only to
physical disease but at some point you will need to become aware of them ! So do not mistake artifice as witnessing. So for the remainder of the week beloveds
become aware of this changeless Self…that unchanging aspect…the inner
silence…the stillness that knows the change…that knows the momentum…use your
own common logic that which knows the momentum cannot be the momentum.
***
We will now do some energy work with you
so that it can enable this understanding energetically too: See yourself as this large circle - this
large circle represents you and your day to day life as it is… always changing…
always
moving… rushing about… feeling one thing… feeling another thing… acting one way…acting
another - your day to day life as it is. And
view at your heart chakra there is a
small pin point of stillness - the Unchanging- that you are all aware of amidst
the rush and changes…amidst the to and
fro…the ups and downs…all of you are aware of that small little unchanging
Self…the stillness…the I Am Presence. Do this. Be aware of the large circle
which is your usual day to day consciousness/changing self/ your current
identity - and the small dot in the centre which is the unchanging Self.
And now focus on that small dot- the
unchanging self. And even as you do that,
as you focus single pointedly on that
unchanging dot , that little dot…that
little part in you that you are aware of as the stillness/silence/changeless
Self …the dot… starts to become bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger.
So as you do this, now, the large circle
is the unchanging Self! And that small
dot in the centre is that changing self…! A complete shift…! The
little dot of change will be present…it will remain…it cannot vanish…but right
now you are the large changeless circle who can thus witness that little
changing self/dot and be unaffected! Which
because you are so vast and large you can now simply witness…! This is an
energetic diagram if you like of what’s happening through meditation … a
complete reversal start to takes place… you tap into that little dot…the I Am
presence… which then becomes the vastness where you abide. And the changing
self where you abided becomes a little dot! Do this a couple of times to enable
you energetically… simply doing this without the sadhana will not work…but doing
this along with the sadhana it will help you s a kriya energetically.
***
Come beloveds one more kriya to help
establish you in the unchanging Self: Do this; see a scene…use a visual of
perhaps a family gathering… (That’s always a good trigger) …I love her…I hate
her…she is mean…she is this…she is that…she is beautiful…she is ugly…! This is
all the changing ‘i’ ‘me’. Do this: you are looking upon a scene, and your
mind is going Ah lovely! Oh ugly! Ah
fair! Oh unfair! I want…I don’t want…! I am happy…I am sad!
And now the same scene, the very same
scene, but you are looking at it through a camera and there is no you behind
the camera! You are the camera without
the you…without the ‘i’ ‘me’…an objective camera lens; and
when an objective camera lens looks at the
VERY same scene…no reactions…no good…no bad…no right…no wrong…no
beautiful…no ugly…no thin…no fat. All
that happened in this was the ‘i’ ‘me’ moved out and the changeless Self (the
camera in this analogy) stepped in.
Try this sometimes when you are looking upon a
particularly aggravating scene…look at it through the lens of a camera and
remove yourself from the equation…let the camera look upon it…enable
the shift from the changing entangled involved up and down self to the still I Am Presence.
***
Let your self enquiry continue: Do the
steps we outlined above. Question
yourself who is it that sees these changes? If
there is someone who sees these changes that must be changeless… and as I see
all the changes physical/emotional- that means I Am that changeless Self!
And the moment you tap into this
changeless Self - the higher frequency, out of the picture, small to vast, noise to inner silence, emotions to objectivity…witnessing…happens! Indeed become aware that even
that self of yours which did the basic tools of positive thinking…non
judgement…forgiveness etc was the
unchanging Self…! There had to be some
point outside you who could do with the positive thinking…who could do the
forgiveness.
So yes beloveds we have been training
you right from the beginning…that journey has led to this…and this journey does
not mean a dropping of all those concepts… which you may now call the basics - in
fact that will happen more and more spontaneously…forgiveness and
non judgment and the positive state of being rather than the artificial
practice of positive thinking. So now when
you forgive someone…when you step into non judgement…when you employ positive
thinking become aware at that point…become aware which part of me can do that ?
It cannot be the involved entangled self…Ah ! This is the changeless Self…I Am
Presence…!
And therefore the shift from ‘i’ ‘me’ to
‘I Am’…the ‘I’ is the same…there is no ‘i’ ‘me’…all the work…all the sadhana is
being done by the ‘I Am’. And this awareness…just this awareness
that the ‘I Am’ is doing it all helps you to further surrender…! So allow this
‘I Am’…unchanging Self to be
real…tangible…so real that you the i/me appear the shadow…and the seeker
becomes the sought and the sought the seeker!
The entire gathering of however minutes
you were here was a series of change…different words…different concepts…different
levels of attention focus…different levels of physical comfort and discomfort…a series of changes but you are aware of
that…and that which is aware of these changes is unchanging. And if you are
aware of something you cannot be that something so you are the unchanging Self.
You may open your eyes whenever you are ready but be aware of that Self
which is aware that you came here…you chatted…you laughed…you closed your
eyes…you went into mediation…you opened your eyes again…that Self who is aware
of these cannot be these.
I Am
That…I Am This…This…This unchanging Self.
And
So It Is…And So It Is…And So It Is.
