NO PERSONAL SELF= MEDITATION
The
birds have vanished down the sky. Now the last cloud drains away. We sit
together, the mountain and me, Until only the mountain remains. - Li Po
(701–762)
A student went to his meditation teacher and said, "My meditation is horrible! I
feel so distracted, or my legs ache, or I'm constantly falling asleep. It's just
horrible!" "It will pass," the teacher said matter-of-factly. Some months
later, the student came back to his teacher. "My meditation is wonderful! I feel
so aware, so peaceful, so alive! It's just wonderful!' "It will pass," the
teacher replied matter-of-factly.
Whatever you are doing, twenty-four hours a day, in all your various
activities, there is something that transcends the Buddhas and Zen Masters; but
as soon as you want to understand it, it's not there. As soon as you try to
gather your attention on it, you have already turned away from it. That is why I
say you see but cannot do anything about it. Lao Tzu
